The Honma Family’s Noh Stage
Introduction Video
Historic Noh Stage of Sado
Owned by the Honma family, who have played a leading role in the Sado Hosyou-ryu Noh since the early Edo period, it is the only privately-owned Noh stage on Sado Island.
Architectural Beauty of the Meiji Era
The current building is believed to have been reconstructed in 1885 (Meiji 18), showcasing decorative design details.
The stage, built in the “yosemune-zukuri” style with tiled roofing, consists of the main stage and a rear area.
The “kagamiita” (mirror board) features a pine tree painting, and the ceiling has a bell hole used in the performance of “Dojoji.”
Secret to Acoustic Excellence
Beneath the stage floor, pots are placed to create echoes, enhancing the acoustic effect in combination with the strategically designed stage layout.
Influence and Continuation of Tradition
Overall, it’s a harmonious and prestigious Noh stage, having a significant influence on other stages on the island.
The oldest performance record dates back to 1749 (Kan’en 2), and even today, regular Noh performances are held in late July every year.
