Ushio Shrine
Introduction Video
Historic Shrine of Katakami
Known affectionately as “Katakami’s Tenno-san,” this ancient shrine was established in 792, enshrining deities such as Okuninushi from the renowned “Izumo Taisha.”
The reconstructed worship hall boasts intricate carvings, including depictions of swimming carps and tales of Emperor Juntoku, reflecting the craftsmanship of master builders and artisans of the time.
A sacred tree, believed to be around 1,000 years old and standing in front of the hall, is revered for granting fertility and safe childbirth.
Prestigious Noh Stage
Located to the left as one faces the main shrine building, the stage faces the main approach.
The current Noh stage, modeled after the Honma family’s stage, was reconstructed in 1900 (Meiji 33) and features a gabled front, a hipped rear, and tiled roofing.
Continuation of Decorations and Tradition
The mirror board is adorned with paintings of pine and bamboo, and the surrounding “rainbow beams” are carved with young leaves, showcasing decorative details.
The permanent chorus seating area has ornamental balustrades on both sides, and both the mirror room and bridgeway are permanent fixtures.
A Representative Noh Stage of Sado
One of the “Kuninaka Four Noh Venues,” where regular Noh performances were popular.
Even today, on the eve of the Ushio Shrine festival on June 12th, performers from around the island gather for a traditional Noh performance.
This stage boasts the largest dimensions in terms of stage height, opening height, and bridgeway length on Sado, standing as one of the island’s most majestic and representative Noh stages.
