Shiizaki Suwa Shrine
Introduction Video
Historic Shrine
Perched on a hill overlooking Lake Kamo, the Shiizaki Suwa Shrine was established in 1376 as a branch deity of the renowned “Suwa Taisha” in Shinshu.
It is believed to be the guardian deity of the local ruling family, the Hisachi Honma clan.
Traditional Noh Stage
Nestled amidst a vast pine forest within the shrine grounds is a Noh stage, believed to have been constructed or relocated around 1902 (Meiji 35).
Built in the “kirizuma-zukuri” style with tiled roofing, the stage consists of the main stage and a rear area.
A pine tree is depicted on the “kagamiita” (mirror board), and there’s a bell hole in the ceiling.
The stage also features a permanent “jiutai-za” (chorus seating area) and a “hashigakari” (bridgeway), which connects to the mirror room.
Cherry Blossom and Noh Performance Spot
The shrine grounds are renowned for their cherry blossoms. Around 1925 (Showa 20), “hanami noh” (flower-viewing Noh performances) were frequently held.
Today, regular “shinogi” Noh performances are staged on the first Saturday of every month from May to October, excluding August.
